Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. Actually, the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart. Crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to turn a bit. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other the veins and nerves in them are pressed, thus bringing about temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

写作意图题。答案定位在第一段While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.（虽然你可能觉得跷二郎腿坐着很舒服，但这可能会导致你没有意识到的健康问题。）所以作者写这篇文章的目的是警告读者跷二郎腿的危害，故选D。

Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neuron（运动神经元）disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and change them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS（渐冻症）, also known as motor neuron disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor problems are expensive, not strong under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration(校对) and abundant, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology. “To change the situation…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids(格) of letters, which each match a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
4. Which is necessary to install GazeSpeak for use according to the passage?
A. a smartphone with a camera.
B. a smartphone with re-calibration system.
C. a smartphone with a sticker on the back.
D. a smartphone connected with other setups.
5. Compared with the disadvantages current input system for ALS sufferers have, GazeSpeak will be_________.
A. low-cost, strong in system, easy to take with users
B. affordable, lightweight, environmentally friendly
C. easy to operate, movable, able to check itself
D. available under strong light, rich in resources, inexpensive
6. The most possible design of the grids will be________.
7. What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To advertise a new app. B. To call for attention to ALS sufferers.
C. To share the information of an.app. D. To show respect to the programmer of the app.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. A

细节理解题。答案定位在最后一段The sticker shows four grids(格) of letters, which each match a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.（标签显示了四个网格的信件,其中每个匹配不同的眼球运动。通过向上、向下、向左或向右看，说话者可以选择他们想要的字母属于哪个网格。然后，人工智能能够预测出他们想说的单词或句子。）故选C。
On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the house.
I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister (栏杆) and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place.
By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me.”
Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.
8. How is the text organized?
A. In order of time. B. In order of frequency.
C. In order of preference. D. In order of importance.
9. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. We didn’t get the alert until we began to watch TV.
B. The weather was severe on the day the tornado hit.
C. We changed the channel to find out what was happening.
D. The author was sleeping when the tornado came.
10. From the text, we can find the author was the following except ________.
A. fearful B. courageous
C. senseless D. determined
11. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. The author had no sense of pain.
B. The author was absorbed in saving her husband and extremely worried about her husband.
C. The author was fearful that her knees and scalp were full of glass.
D. The author was terrified in that moment.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. B

You may know all about vitamin C，but do you know why vitamin D is also important to your body?Experts from the Children's Hospital in Boston，US，have said that some teens don't get enough of this important nutrient.
Vitamin D can help bones and muscles grow strong and healthy. If a person is short of vitamin D，he or she may have problems like rickets(佝偻病)and osteoporosis．Rickets is mainly found in children.Osteoporosis，the thinning of bone，is a common problem as people get older.
Studies in these years have found that vitamin D may also have other uses.If someone is short of vitamin D, he may have heart problems or die from some cancers.
The easiest way to get vitamin D is from sunlight. But many people worry about getting skin cancer and skin damage from the sun. Also, even skin color has an influence.Darker skinned people get less vitamin D than lighter skinned people.Older people get less vitamin D than younger people. You can also get it from foods. Some food such as cheese and egg yolks (蛋黄) have some vitamin D．But most of vitamin D in the American diet comes from food like milk with the vitamin added.
Now more doctors are testing for vitamin D in their patients. But some doctors worry that if people take too much vitamin D, it might be bad for their body.At the same time, skin doctors tell people to be careful with sunlight.
